Cass Meurig is one of Wales's foremost crwth and traditional fiddle players. As well as working as a soloist she plays in a duo with guitarist Nial Cain and with the North Wales band Pigyn Clust. She played with Fernhill between 2000 and 2004 and also plays with Gorwel and Fiona Owen. |
In January 2004 Cass released her first solo album of music for the crwth (a six-stringed bowed lyre unique to Wales) entitled 'crwth' on the acclaimed fflach:tradd label. In 2009 Cass Meurig and Nial Cain released their first album DEUAWD, also on Fflach:tradd, which brings tunes and songs from deep within the Welsh tradition together with new compositions, combining rare gems of old songs with lively dance tunes and haunting slow airs, some sung with verses in penillion style. Snowdon Fiddle Club welcomes new players of all ages and abilities, from beginners to experienced players. 'Alawon John Thomas', Cass's edition of the 1752 John Thomas manuscript of fiddle music is available from the National Library of Wales's website www.llgc.org.uk. It includes around 450 tunes collected in North-East Wales in the first half of the eighteenth century and a substantial text on the historical and musical context of the manuscript and the history of the tunes.
